How Often Should I Be Pumping?

You recently had a baby, you’re breastfeeding, you have a pump, now what? Is it staring at you begging to be used, or has it already become a great friend? One way or another we are bound to ask ourselves: how often should I be pumping?

Why are you pumping??

In order to to answer the bigger question, we have to start here. Then, you can make a plan.

  • I need a small stash.

How should I plan on pumping in order to just have enough for a small stash? The most efficient way: wear a milk catcher while you nurse. If that’s not your thing, I recommend to try pumping after an early morning nursing session (when your milk production is the highest). You can do this immediately following a feed for several minutes, a couple times a week as desired.

  • I need a decent/medium sized stash.

I’m going back to work/plan on being away from my baby for an extended period of time. Different plans work best for different people. Start about halfway through your maternity leave or 4 weeks before you return to work. Starting the process this early allows for you to be able to adjust your schedule/plan according to your needs and makes the process less stressful. You can add a pumping session after an early morning feed, several times a week. You can even add in an additional pumping session before you go to bed if needed.

  • I want to exclusively pump.

    Pump. Wash. Repeat.

Pumping schedules are going to look different for every mom. Protect your supply, and do what works for you! The plans I laid out above are only suggestions that are commonly practiced. Feel free to pump however you’d like. However, if you plan on returning to work and want to discuss a more detailed plan you can schedule an appointment with me and we can create a personalized plan that works perfect for your day-to-day life.
