Breastfeeding and the First Trimester
When I was in elementary school, my mom made me learn how to hand embroider. Ultimately, it passed the time on car rides and I ended up with a simple craft to be proud of. At the time I thought it was pointless and I didn't even consider it valuable… like at all. Fast forward to motherhood. Now, I have the ability to hand stitch clothes for my 2 little boys.
My point is - things that unknowingly happen early on in life prepare us for the future, whether we realize those things or not.
What does this have to do with breastfeeding? Before you conceived, your body had already been preparing for breastfeeding your baby. Crazy enough… your boobs actually started developing while YOU were in utero.
It's a fascinating and complicated process that involves changes on a cellular level in combination with hormones, your genes, and the tissue surrounding your boobs.
While the process began during YOUR embryonic development, it continued through puberty and it will continue through your pregnancy pregnancy and eventually lactation.
I bet you didn’t know you were getting a science lesson today😀
If you thought your body was doing a lot of work by growing a baby, it's actually doing additional work to get ready to feed the little guy or girl!!
Side note: here are my favorite prenatal vitamins!
If you are planning to breastfeed, begin slowly thinking about how you should prepare.
I recommend researching lactation consultants around you. It’s no rush… but who do you want on your team? Hint: We would love to be that support system for you!
Sending you hugs & anti-nausea meds,
